Zikr-e-Shab-e-Firaaq se Wehshat usay bhi thi,

Meri tarha kisi se Muhabbat usay bhi thi..

(zikr-e-shab-e-firaaq = mention of the night of separation)

(Wehshat = fear/dread)

Mujh ko bhi shauq tha naye cheharon ki deed ka,

Rastaa badal ke chalane ki aadat use bhi thi…

Us raat der tak vo rahaa mahv-e-guftagu,

Masruf main bhi kam tha faraagat use bhi thi…

(mahv-e-guftaguu = immersed in conversation)

(masruuf = busy; faraaGat = leisure/freedom from business)

Sunata tha vo bhi sab se puraani kahaaniyaan,

Taaza rafaaqaton ki zarurat use bhi thi…

(rafaaqat = friendship)

Mujh se bichar ke shahar me ghul mil gayaa wo shakhs,

Haalanke shahar bhar se raqabat use bhi thi…

(Haalanke = although; raqabat = enmity)

Wo mujh se barh ke zabt ka aadi tha jee gaya,

Warna har ek saans qayaamat use bhi thi…

(zabt = tolerance/restraint; aadii = habituated)
